Background of the Study
Regional trade agreements (RTAs) are critical for enhancing economic development, trade relationships, and cross-border collaboration in Nigeria. Hadejia Local Government Area (LGA) in Jigawa State, with its proximity to neighboring countries and other Nigerian states, is significantly influenced by the geopolitical alignments between the federal government, regional powers, and international partners. These alignments shape trade policies, customs regulations, and the overall economic landscape in Hadejia, especially given its role as a key trade hub in northern Nigeria (Ahmed & Musa, 2024). The dynamics of regional trade agreements in this area are influenced by political, economic, and cultural factors, with geopolitical considerations playing a central role. This study explores how geopolitical alignments impact regional trade agreements in Hadejia, focusing on the opportunities and challenges they present for local economic development.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Hadejia's strategic position as a trade center is undermined by complex geopolitical alignments that affect its participation in regional trade agreements. Political instability, border conflicts, and inconsistent government support have hindered the area’s ability to fully benefit from trade agreements. This research aims to examine how these geopolitical factors affect trade flows, economic growth, and overall regional development.
